Booking your first therapy session can feel like a big step — exciting, nerve-wracking, maybe a little vulnerable. The good news? There's nothing you need to prepare or "get right." A first session is simply the beginning of a conversation. Here's what actually happens, so you can walk in (or log on) knowing what to expect.

Before the session

You'll usually answer a few gentle questions when you book — what you're hoping for, and any preferences (language, gender, style). On Tuliar, this is how we match you with a counsellor or coach who fits. Find a quiet, private spot, pop in earphones if you're at home, and have water nearby. That's it.

The first few minutes

Your counsellor will introduce themselves and explain two important things: confidentiality (what you share stays private) and how sessions work. This is your space — there are no wrong answers and no pressure to share more than you're ready to.

The heart of the session

Mostly, your counsellor will listen. They might ask things like:

  • "What made you decide to reach out now?"
  • "What does a hard day look like for you?"
  • "What would feeling better actually look like?"

You don't need to tell your whole life story. Start wherever feels natural. Tears, silence, or "I don't know where to begin" are all completely okay — and very common.

It's a two-way fit

Therapy works best when you feel comfortable with your counsellor. The first session is partly about seeing whether the connection feels right. If it doesn't quite click, that's not failure — it's useful information, and you can switch to someone who suits you better.

You're allowed to interview your therapist, too. The relationship is the medicine — it should feel safe.

How you might feel afterward

Some people feel lighter and relieved. Others feel tired or stirred up — talking about real things takes energy. All of it is normal. Be gentle with yourself for the rest of the day.

Getting the most from therapy

  • Be honest — even about the things that feel small or embarrassing.
  • Give it a few sessions — trust and progress build over time.
  • Notice between sessions — jotting down feelings or moments (Tuliar has a private journal for this) makes each session richer.
  • Ask questions — about the approach, the pace, anything.
